In our ever evolving world, the kitchen has now become a very dynamic place for a family. It is no longer just the place to cook meals in. In fact, the kitchen now serves also as dining room, office, study room, reading room and much more. Therefore it is very important that the lighting plan is well thought out when your kitchen is due for a remodel.
Depending on the size of your kitchen, there are many ways to address the lighting plan during the kitchen remodeling process. The important thing to keep in mind is that the areas where most or all of the work is done should be well lit. Nothing could be more draining on a person than to work in a poorly lit room. Below you will find a couple of bright ideas when remodeling your kitchen's lighting.

General lighting. As the term itself suggests, this is the one that will be used or turned on most of the time. For a small kitchen, one light in the center should be adequate. But for a larger kitchen, one general light may not be enough. Then you may want to consider recessed lighting.
Recessed lighting. This is basically all about placement. Strategically planned recessed lighting
can augment general lighting by brightening up the areas where most of the tasks are performed.
These areas are usually your countertops, islands, or even the range top. One thing to keep in mind is to keep the recessed lighting
as close to the work area as possible. If kept too far, then you could get shadows and that is something you want to avoid because it defeats the purpose of having your recessed lighting
augment the general light.
Pendants. Not the kind that hangs from a necklace but rather one that hangs from the ceiling. Pendant lighting
really works best when it hangs over your island or over the dining table if your kitchen has one. Not only does it provide adequate brightness, but it certainly adds a decorative touch to your kitchen. There are a multitude of pendants
to choose from and the right one can certainly accent your kitchen's overall look and feel.
These ideas that have been discussed are the most basic and probably most important lighting plans for your kitchen. They provide good lighting and with a little imagination, should add to the warmth of your kitchen. There are certainly many other ways to brighten up your kitchen.

I love recessed lights and would recommend them especially for small kitchens. A traditional light fixture that hangs from the ceiling takes up space, divides space, and imposes itself on the room. That imposing presence would be especially felt in a small kitchen.

Depending on the model of the recessed light, I find that it adds a touch of "urbanness" to the kitchen. Like you're in a fine restaurant or a real upscale bar. And you don't even have to pay for the overpriced food and drinks!
